Swinburne water saver wins world IT prize

15 July 2008

Swinburne water saver wins world IT prizeSwinburne graduate Dimaz Pramudya won first place in the software design category at the Imagine Cup World Finals in Paris last week.

Dimaz and the Oz-dream team (comprising four students from separate universities) earned the prize for their water management system SOAK – a computerised system designed to help drought-affected farmers.

The theme of this year’s competition centred on sustain-ability and required students to come up with a working technological idea with the potential to change the world.

Oz-dream were also chosen to receive intense business and technology training as part of the Imagine Cup Innovation Accelerator program, which will help them turn their innovative software into a business reality.

Imagine Cup is sponsored by Microsoft and is now in its sixth year. More than 100,000 students from 100 countries competed in last year’s event.

Dimaz graduated from Swinbunre with a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science and Software Engineering) in 2007.

Swinburne-Thammasat ‘thai’ the knot

15 July 2008

Swinburne-Thammasat 'thai' the knotSwinburne’s ties with Thammasat University, Thailand, went from strength to strength last month with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU also set out to explore opportunities for Thammasat staff to undertake research programs at Swinburne’s Faculty of Life and Social Sciences.

Swinburne graduate heads to Paris for Imagine Cup world final

1 July 2008

Swinburne graduate Dimaz Pramudya will represent Australia at the Imagine Cup world finals in Paris this month.

Imagine Cup is an annual Microsoft-sponsored competition touted as the IT-equivalent to Australian Idol. The theme of this year’s competition centred on technology and the sustainable environment and required students to develop a working technological idea with the potential to change the world.

Dimaz and his fellow ‘Oz-dream’ team members won the Australian final earlier this year with their Smart Operational Agriculture toolkit (SOAK) – a computerised system to help drought-affected farmers manage their water resources.

They intended to come up with a solution to better manage household and industrial water but revised their plan when they found that the agriculture industry uses about 66 per cent of Australia’s water.

After speaking to farmers about the problems with their current systems, they developed a solution to control farm sprinklers and prioritise water use where and when it’s needed. Farmers can also be notified by SMS when a field reaches critical moisture level and when there is an irrigation failure such as a burst water main.

“Winning Imagine Cup has been a great experience, it really opened our eyes to environmental issues,” Dimaz says. “If we can develop technology to increase sustainability, it can change the world completely.”

Dimaz graduated from Swinburne in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science and Software Engineering). He now works as a software developer for a contact centre software and solutions company.

Global leadership students head to the US

17 June 2008

Northeastern UniversityFive MBA students are set to head to Northeastern University, Boston, for the inaugural Global Leadership Summer Program.

The second year students will undertake an intensive 4-week program in July as part of Swinburne’s prestigious joint masters program with Northeastern.

The program will be an invaluable opportunity to experience life and study in the US and explore Boston at the height of the North American summer.

International Business student Raj Vydhyam is looking forward to gaining a greater understanding of America’s social, business and educational culture.

“I've enjoyed the Global Leadership Program and the company of great and dynamic Northeastern lecturers in Melbourne. Now, it's time to explore the Global Leadership of Northeastern in its own territory.”

In comparison to other programs, Raj says the Swinburne-Northeastern program is more appropriate to the needs of today’s corporate world.

“It provides a more practical and real-time learning experience than a normal MBA and an opportunity to acquire a double master in two years – which is a great incentive for any aspiring business student.”

Swinburne flies into India

19 May 2008

Swinburne flies into IndiaAviation Programs Coordinator Stephen Fankhauser made a flying trip to New Delhi last month to promote Swinburne’s aviation courses at Aerodrome India 2008.

Stephen attended the exhibition – which is the largest international exhibition in the airport sector in South-East Asia – as part of the Victorian Government’s Aviation Trade Mission to India.

Stephen said the exhibition provided a valuable “insight into the rapid growth of India’s airport infrastructure.”

Civil aviation in India has been growing at 25 to 30 per cent annually. Such growth can only be sustained if infrastructure is adequately developed along with skilled human resources.

“It was a great opportunity for us to promote our courses to prospective students,” said Stephen. “Hopefully we can work towards collaborating with the industry in India.”

Double Vision: twins pave identical pathways to Swinburne

7 March 2008

Double Vision: twins pave identical pathways to SwinburneFor identical twins, Swarna and Raji Vaduganathan, it was a natural progression to commence their research careers in the same field at Swinburne.

The sisters arrived in Australia late last year having completed a Bachelor of Biochemistry and a Master of Biochemistry at the same universities in India.

Swinburne was a natural choice for Swarna and Raji as they have been living with a relative in Hawthorn.

“We enjoy meeting students from different nations and they have all been very friendly. The professors here are also very approachable, and even though we are only new, no one treats us any differently.”

Swarna and Raji will complete their PhD on a full-time basis over three and a half years.

“I would like to contribute something to make wheat plants grow even under stress and saline conditions, so that there will not be any shortage of wheat for the growing population,” said Swarna.

“When we finish our course we would like to continue living in Australia to complete a post doctorate or get a job here. We are both interested in teaching as a career.”
