Swinburne offers Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) programs including PhD, Masters & Professional Doctorates across all faculties. Our HDR programs provide postgraduate students with a unique opportunity to engage in research that makes an important contribution to the development of new knowledge.

Swinburne offers a number of Scholarships to PhD and Masters by Research candidates.
Step 1 - Make Sure You Qualify
PhD minimum entry requirements
Applicants must have completed at least four years (or equivalent) of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement. For example, either:
- A four year degree
- A three year degree and a Masters by Research
- A three year degree and an Honours year
- A three year degree and a Masters by Coursework that includes a research component with a duration of at least one semester full time (or part time equivalent)
- A three year degree and a postgraduate diploma in Psychology
A high level of achievement is defined as the equivalent of a four year Swinburne Honours degree that includes a significant research component in the fourth year, leading to an Honours degree class 1 (average grade between 80-100) or class 2A (average grade between 70-79) level.
Masters by Research minimum entry requirements
A three year degree with a minimum average of Credit in the final year units of study.
English language requirements
International candidates must obtain a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 575 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) (IBT) minimum score of 85 with no band less than 18, or two years full-time equivalent formal study in English.
