Overseas health cover

It is compulsory for all international students holding student visas, and their dependants, to maintain adequate Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) throughout their course of study. Exceptions to this are Norwegian and most Swedish students on government-funded programs. The Australian Department of Health and Ageing has advised that these countries have national health schemes that provide adequate health insurance overseas.

Visa length cover

From 1 July 2010 the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) changed the student visa requirements.

Under condition 8501, students will have to obtain OSHC for the proposed duration of their student visa.

For students who will be undertaking a packaged course, there cannot be a gap in the OSHC coverage.

Already have OSHC cover?

Students who already have OSHC cover must still prove visa-length cover. There cannot be a gap in the OSHC coverage.

OSHC Worldcare

OSHC Worldcare is one of the organisations authorised by the Australian Government to provide overseas health cover to international students in Australia. It is the preferred provider at Swinburne University of Technology and was chosen after an extensive selection process.

OHSC Worldcare can assist Swinburne international students with all their OSHC enquiries and provide on-campus services, including cash claims.

An OSHC Worldcare representative is available every week at the Hawthorn, Lilydale and Prahran campuses. Students can ask questions about their OSHC, apply for holiday credits, seek claiming options, find out how to order an OSHC membership card online and much more.

Policy types

From 1 January 2012 all new Swinburne OSHC Worldcare policies will provide the OSHC Worldcare Essentials package, which includes the following benefits:
  • no waiting period for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital treatment for psychiatric pre-existing conditions
  • no waiting periods for cover in relation to pregnancy services
Another important change that will come into effect with all new OSHC Worldcare policies from 1 January 2012 relates to the types of OSHC policies available. Instead of the two policies currently available, Single and Family, there will be three policies available – Single, Dual Family and Multi Family. These policies are outlined in the table below.

Single policy Covers only the valid student visa holder
Dual-family policy Covers one valid student visa holder plus either one adult spouse or recognised de facto partner, or one or more dependant children
Multi-family policy Covers one student visa holder plus more than one dependant – this can only include one adult spouse or recognised de facto partner, and one or more dependant children
