Overview

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in wide-ranging, highly specialised technical event-management skills with a strategic research, planning and communication focus. Event organisation and management takes place across the full spectrum of business and community activity. This qualification has particular relevance in the community, cultural, hospitality, sporting and tourism sectors.
Graduates of this course will be expected to have the skills to undertake work in both an office environment, where event planning and organisation take place, and at an event site.
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who analyse, design and execute judgements using wide-ranging technical, creative, conceptual or managerial competencies. Their knowledge base may be specialised or broad. These individuals are often accountable for group outcomes.
Swinburne’s stream focuses on creative and technical production and includes a practical hands-on approach through our Practice Firm. Work placement is encouraged to further develop the student skills to industry standards and provide employment opportunities.
(Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and on campus.)

Course description

Course structure

Units of competency are delivered in several modes that include stand-alone and holistic delivery and assessment in classroom, flexible WebCT and practical work placement delivery.
The department's training restaurants provide students with the opportunity for hands-on training in food and beverage operations, including the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate.
Applicants who have successfully completed VETiS Hospitality studies receive credit transfers and can complete a Diploma of Hospitality Management (Fast Track) in one year of full-time study.

English language requirements

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Certificate: EAP 4 Upper Intermediate: 70%; OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 537 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 75, with no individual band below 17.
