This program aims to provide students from a wide range of disciplines and business experiences with concepts, frameworks, research and analytical skills to enable them to operate confidently and effectively in a global environment, characterised by constant environmental change and requiring flexible and innovative responses. In the design and development of this program we canvassed industry perspectives on program design and its relevance to contemporary organisational challenges. A common theme linking units of study in the degree is that of business sustainability in a globalised environment.
The diploma consists of units of study from business and other disciplines. These units of study are grouped into four key areas supporting sustainable commercial and business development:
  • Commercial accountability in a global environment
  • Economic drivers and consequences in a global knowledge economy
  • Managing people in constant change environments with a sensitivity to social and psychological implications of change and through innovative organisational design, systems and learning cultures
  • Integrative approaches for leveraging from information and communication technologies (ICTs)

Course structure

To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma of Commerce, students must complete 100 credit points comprising: 50 credit points from the Graduate Certificate level, including the core unit LMC501B, plus:
  • The core unit of study LMC601 (12.5 credit points)
  • Three additional Stage 6 or Stage 7 units (37.5 credit points) (subject to the approval of the program coordinator)
Additional rules
Students wishing to undertake the project unit (MTB830) will require approval from the program coordinator.

Aims and objectives

Upon successful completion, students will have capacity to:
  • Critique and respond to challenges associated with the leadership and management of people in complex change environments
  • Apply organisational performance frameworks in developing sustainability strategies
  • Apply knowledge and skills around reputation management for effective stakeholder engagement
  • Critique and apply organisational design theory and frameworks to facilitate innovation, collaboration and organisational learning
  • Holistic stakeholder management skills, including those for effective and sustainable supply chains
  • High order teamwork and communication skills to support group-based projects and report writing

Entry requirements

This course has academic and English language requirements.

Academic requirements

Entry into the Graduate Certificate of Commerce will be available to applicants without a degree who have significant relevant business experience, normally at least 4 years relevant experience, or applicants with an approved undergraduate degree in a non-business discipline, from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent.

English language requirements

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Certificate: EAP 5 Advanced: 70%; OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 79, with no individual band below 18.
