The Master of Information Technology Business Analysis (MITBA) has been designed in consultation with industry executives, business analysis practitioners and professional bodies, to meet the growing demand from industry for graduates with the knowledge and skills of the key aspects of business analysis practice in organisations.

Course description

Students will gain knowledge in the core disciplinary areas that underpin the business analyst profession, including data, information modeling, process modeling and redesign, and requirements elicitation and analysis. Emphasis will be placed on developing analytical skills for a diverse range of applications and acquisition strategies, including package selection and implementation, agile development and flexible solutions incorporating cloud technologies. In addition, students will build business knowledge and understanding in the fundamentals of project management and learn to manage the soft human dimensions of business analysis.
The Master of Information Technology Business Analysis is part of a nested suite of programs, which includes the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology Business Analysis and the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology Business Analysis.
Note: Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and on campus.

Course structure

The Master of Information Technology Business Analysis consists of 16 units of study (200 credit points) to be completed over either two years full-time or equivalent part-time*, dependant on the enrolled load of the student.
Students can enrol in the Graduate Certificate (50 credit points) or Graduate Diploma (100 credit points) (subject to eligibility) and upon successful completion of these programs progress to the Masters program, as part of the nested program.
To be awarded the Master of Information Technology Business Analysis, students must complete a total of 16 units (200 credit points), including eight core units (100 credit points), four options (50 credit points) and four electives from a given set of electives (50 credit points).
Part-time students (domestic students only*)
Students studying part-time should refer to the general timetable for unit availability. Please note, not all units will be available in the evening in every semester.
*Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and on campus.

Business analysis core Students must complete all eight units:

Students complete one unit from each of the following groups (four in total), according to the following rules below.

HBC608 Business Modelling and Analysis
Business Analysis - Project Management option***
HIT7407 Information Systems Project Management or HIT8060 Systems Project Management

HIT8442 Business Analysis Internship Project subject to meeting pre-requisite requirements or
HIT8416 Industry Project (Analytical) 

Business Analysis electives
Students must choose four from the electives below:
*Students with no background in information systems (IS) and no work experience will be required to study HIT5401 Introduction to Business Information Systems. Students who have studied basic IS in previous undergraduate courses, but who do not hold a degree in IS, would be expected to study HIT8424 Information Systems Management. Students with a degree (not necessarily in IS/ IT), but who have at least three years relevant work experience in a substantial organisation, are encouraged to take HIT8036 Business Information Systems for a Rapidly Changing World.
**Students with no background knowledge or study in accounting should study HBC606 Accounting Principles. Those with some background knowledge should study HBC608 Business Modelling and Analysis.
***Students with no IS/ IT work experience will be required to take HIT7407 Information Systems Project Management. Students with at least two years relevant IT work experience are encouraged to take HIT8060 Systems Project Management.

Learning outcomes
 A graduate of the Master of Information Technology Business Analysis program is expected to be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding and competence in key domains of business analysis (e.g. as exemplified in the BABOK2 and the AIBA Development Framework)
  • Demonstrate creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and skills to the analysis of complex problems and to the definition of appropriate solutions to those problems
  • Communicate and develop effective working relationships with key business and technology stakeholders to identify business and information requirements from which to articulate appropriate solutions to a given problem situation
  • Apply appropriate enterprise architectural design, systems solutions, and governance methods to develop business and technology solutions to improve performance of key business processes and deliver value to key business stakeholders
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the social, political and cultural contexts in which the key stakeholders interact

Entry requirements

This course has academic and English language requirements.

Academic requirements

An approved undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution equivalent to a three year Australian bachelor degree.

English language requirements

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Certificate: EAP 5 Advanced: 70%; OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 79, with no individual band below 18. Refer to the English Language Requirements website for further information.
