English Language Programs

Swinburne offers various levels of language programs to suit your needs

Please note - To enter TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate courses directly from ELICOS, students must complete English for Academic Purposes, Level 2 (Advanced) and be recommended for the formal course they wish to study.

Students who have achieved a specific level within the general entry requirements may be eligible to commence General English 1, General English 2 or English for Academic Purposes 1 half way into the course. This will result in a reduced course fee and duration.


General English Levels 1 and 2 (Pre-Intermediate) - 10 weeks each
General English Level 2 (Intermediate) - 10 weeks

The General English program extends your basic knowledge in grammar and vocabulary and focuses on increasing your confidence and skills in English communication.

Classes in General English, Level 1 include: Writing and Grammar, Communication Skills/Listening, Reading , Computer-assisted Language Learning, Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and supervised independent learning

Classes in General English, Level 2 include: Writing and Grammar, Communication Skills/Listening, Reading , Project Work and supervised independent learning.


English for Academic Purposes, Level 1 (Upper Intermediate) - 10 weeks

This level of the course introduces the language and study skills required for tertiary studies. Emphasis is placed on essay writing, reading more complex texts, communication and listening skills, individual oral presentations and academic skills. You will undertake supervised independent learning, and can choose from a variety of electives to concentrate on your specific language needs.


English for Academic Purposes, Level 2 (Advanced) - 10 weeks

At this level you will take classes designed specifically for your intended course of study. The program covers the specialised language of a variety of fields of studies, for example Art/Design, Business and IT.

Additional classes cover essay and report writing, communication and listening skills, group oral presentations and research skills. You will undertake supervised independent learning, and will also choose from a variety of electives to further work on your specific language needs.


Intensive English

This 5 week program is for students who have already achieved the entry requirements for their formal course but wish to update their English. It focuses English language skills before beginning an academic course, and includes an orientation to Western approaches to study and social interaction.

The program includes essay and report writing, critical reading, listening and speaking, australian idiom, library and research skills, tutorial and oral presentation skills.
