Why should I go on Exchange?

There are many reasons to go on student exchange:
the opportunity for academic enrichment and to learn more about your interest area within another context
you can broaden your academic scope by taking classes not available here at Swinburne
you can increase your employment opportunities as many employers look for graduates with international experience
by undertaking a student exchange program you are demonstrating your independence, flexibility and ambition
living abroad is a challenge that enables you to develop your independence and understanding of yourself and others
you can become part of the global village by making professional and personal contacts while abroad.

Am I eligible for the Student Exchange program?

Almost all Higher Education undergraduate Swinburne students have the opportunity to incorporate a semester or two abroad as part of their Swinburne degree. The program is designed for local and international students. AusAID funded students are not eligible for the program.

Applicants are expected to have a proven academic record of at least a Credit Average (65+).

Postgraduate and any other students not in these categories who are interested in participating should contact the Education Abroad Office.

Where can I go on Exchange?

Our partner institutions are carefully chosen to reflect the academic standards of Swinburne University of Technology. Before you leave, you will set up Study Plan with your Faculty or Division. This ensures that all of your studies abroad will be accredited to your Swinburne degree. So going on exchange should not extend your degree at all!

Swinburne has developed student exchange agreements with over 50 institutions. Our partners are primarily based in Western Europe , North America , Scandinavia , Asia and the United Kingdom .

There is a destination to suit you and your degree. You can study Business in the USA; Design in Korea; Mechanical Engineering in France; Biology in Sweden; the options are endless! To find out exactly where you can go, consult our full list of exchange partners.

How much will it cost?

You do not pay tuition fees to the host institution. However, you are required to pay your travel, accommodation and living costs.

To support and students who wish to undertake a studies towards their Swinburne degree, the Education Abroad Office administers a number of scholarships and travel grants. In 2007 a huge new scholarship scheme was initiated, so there are now funding opportunities for most destinations.

When can I go on Exchange?

If you are completing a three-year undergraduate program you should plan to go in your 2nd year. If you are undertaking a four-year double degree you could go in 2nd or 3rd year. It is not always possible for you to go on exchange in your final year, as Swinburne subjects become increasingly specialised and appropriate equivalents are not always available at our partner institutions.

Your exchange program can be one or two semesters. The Northern Hemisphere academic year starts in September each year and finishes in May. The Fall semester usually runs from mid/late August to late December/early January. The Spring semester commences in January and ends in late May. Some of our partner institutions operate on a trimester or quarterly basis. Your exchange semester may depend on subject availability or whether you want to experience a Northern Hemisphere summer!

Remember: student exchange is more than travelling - it's about immersing yourself in another culture and making the host country your classroom. This is an opportunity to make yourself at home within a completely different environment.
