A Taste of Circus: Contemporary Performance in Melbourne

A Taste of Circus is a 4-week program designed for students with an interest in contemporary circus arts. Students will develop their physical skills through experiential learning, while also undertaking studies in performance, dance and cultural studies in classes held on-site at National Institute of Circus Arts and excursions to some of Melbourne's principal cultural and performing arts venues.

Program Dates

A Taste of Circus will run from Monday 2 June until Friday 27 June 2008. Applications for 2008 are now closed, but the program will run again in 2009.

Program Location

The program will be undertaken at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), Australia's national centre of excellence for professional training in contemporary circus arts. NICA is located on the Prahran campus of Swinburne University of Technology, 6kms from the city centre of Melbourne, Australia. Training takes place in the Sidney Myer Circus Studio, just a cartwheel away from the vibrant café, arts and fashion precinct of Chapel Street.

Program Aim

The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Explore contemporary circus and physical theatre and its relationship within the Australian cultural environment
  • Harness existing physical and performance skills in a circus environment
  • Build awareness of circus as a growing artform and tool for engagement with young people
  • Experience a uniquely Australian style of contemporary circus, drawing from Russian, Chinese and European styles
  • Experience the artistic and cultural landscape of the city of Melbourne

Participants

Undergraduate students from overseas institutions, ideally with a background in arts, performing arts, gymnastics, martial arts, cheerleading, dance, trampolining, physical theatre, sports acrobatics, diving, extreme sport or circus. This program may also appeal to those wanting to use circus as a tool to engage children and teenagers in an alternative recreational activity or as a tool for social intervention with young people at risk.

Accommodation

Students will be housed in the Unilodge @ Swinburne Place apartments located in the heart of the Hawthorn campus. The Hawthorn campus has a train station in the middle of the campus giving students easy access to the city centre (15 minutes) and the Prahran campus (25 minutes).

For this program students will be accommodated in serviced 3 & 4 bedroom apartments. Each apartment is fully furnished and secure with separate single bedrooms, two bathrooms and a modern fully equipped kitchen with an open plan living / dining area.

Each apartment offers high speed internet connection, TV and telephone. All apartments are fully secure and bedrooms in shared apartments are lockable.
