Swinburne is inviting high-achieving students with strong leadership potential and a desire to jump-start their global career to participate in the inaugural Swinburne Future Leaders Program.

Shanghai SkylineThis two-week study tour to China is a unique opportunity to gain international hands-on experience. Activities will include industry visits, meeting government officials and expert speakers on a wide range of leadership, economic and trade topics.

Participation in the Future Leaders Program will give your résumé a competitive edge and will help you stand out from the crowd with future employers. It will provide you with real opportunities for networking and securing advantageous contacts. What’s more, you get to experience the many delights Asia has to offer!.

Program Dates:

Boat in Hong KongThe tour will commence immediately after the completion
of Semester 2 exams - Saturday 24th November, returning
to Australia in early December.

 


Application Procedure

Application forms are available from the Education Abroad Office. 

The tour will take maximum 20 students and we expect a lot of interest in this program, and thus have developed an application process that will allow students to show their suitability for the program. The application will consist of:

  • completion of an application form of one page;
  • an essay of 300-500 words;
  • an official Current Result Certificate;
  • one Academic Reference from former or present academic advisors;
  • typed resume detailing academic achievements, work history, leadership training, and referee contact details and
  • a photocopy of your current passport.


Costs and Funding

Popular Chinese Food - DumplingsThe program fee will be approximately $4250

This amount is inclusive of airfare and accommodation, as well as insurance and visa costs. Ground costs such as entry fees and internal transportation is also included.
Meals are excluded.

If a scholarship is awarded, the effective cost will be $3000.
A deposit of $500 is required to secure your place – this must be received with your completed application by 14th September. Unsuccessful applicants will get a full refund.

28th September: $2000 payment
12th October: $1750 final payment (approximately)

Scholarships

There will be 16 scholarships of $1250 each awarded to participants.
All applications will be considered for the scholarships. These will be awarded based on application timeliness; academic merit; and demonstrated leadership potential as outlined in your application statement.


The Future Leaders Program:

View of Shanghai from Jin Mao TowerThe Future Leaders program will centre around a two-week overseas study tour to leading cities of China, providing you with hands-on experience and introducing concepts essential for the future leader. Complementing in-country visits and seminars, the program will include the delivery of academic components.

 

You will:

  • acquire greater global awareness of socioeconomic and cultural differences
  • develop entrepreneurial thinking in relation to working in partnership with China and Asia in  general
  • gain the ability to recognise international opportunities with both economic and social contexts
  • enhance your understanding of their Swinburne studies in relation to international practices
  • develop knowledge of international networks and the practice of networking
  • discover traits, qualities, and values in international leadership


Activities:

You will have the opportunity to:Delicious Chiense food

  • undertake industry tours and site visits to a range of companies and government agencies with a combination of both Australian and Asian interests
  • review cultural differences, hearing from speakers on cultural experiences within transnational organisations
  • observe cultural and linguistic differences to understand their effects
  • examine the concept of international networks, through exposure to an Australian network in Asia
  • observe leadership values and traits, through meeting global leaders and being exposed to entrepreneurial thinking


Eligible Candidates:

The program will bring together a select group of high-achieving students from multiple disciplines.

To be eligible, you must be a current Swinburne student, a consistent high achiever in your academic studies, and display strong leadership potential. The program is especially tailored to mature-minded students who are in the final stages of their Swinburne degree. So if you are due to complete at the end of 2007, you are eligible for this program.

The selection of the group will be a competitive process.
