The Northeastern Study Centre was established at Swinburne's Hawthorn campus in 2006 under a landmark agreement between Swinburne and Northeastern to offer combined courses. It brings together two high ranking universities from two continents that share an entrepreneurial spirit and a focus on empowering graduates to think creatively, be original and take the lead.

In what is considered to be a world first, Swinburne and Northeastern offer combined programs ranging from postgraduate degrees through to short courses. The universities offer dual master degrees under the banner of the Global Leadership Program. This program enables students to obtain two master degrees in two years – either a Master of Business (International Business) or Master of Accounting from Swinburne and a Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern. On completion of the program graduates receive testamurs from each institution.

The Global Leadership program was the first step in a broader range of joint programs the universities offer together, both in Australia and in the United States.  The 'NU in Australia' program for American pre-freshman students commenced in September 2007, which saw 23 young students study at Swinburne for eight weeks as a precursor to them embarking on their undergraduate studies at Northeastern. This program is now an annual event. In addition a joint program in Education and Astronomy has recently been launched and will is based at Northeastern with the Astronomy content provided online by Swinburne. In 2008 it is hoped that a joint Masters program in Biotechnology and Leadership will also be developed for delivery in Melbourne.

The Northeastern Study Centre has been established at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus to manage the partnership between the two universities and provide information and support to prospective and enrolled students about the combined courses.
