 Global leadership students head to Boston
 Five students are set to head to Northeastern University, Boston, for the inaugural Global Leadership Summer Program. The second year students will undertake an intensive 4-week program in July as part of Swinburne’s prestigious joint masters program with Northeastern.
The program will be an invaluable opportunity to experience life and study in the US and explore Boston at the height of the North American summer. International Business student Raj Vydhyam is looking forward to gaining a greater understanding of America’s social, business and educational culture.
“I've enjoyed the Global Leadership Program and the company of great and dynamic Northeastern lecturers in Melbourne. Now, it's time to explore the Global Leadership of Northeastern in its own territory.”
In comparison to other programs, Raj says the Swinburne-Northeastern program is more appropriate to the needs of today’s corporate world.
“It provides a more practical and real-time learning experience than a normal MBA and an opportunity to acquire a double master in two years – which is a great incentive for any aspiring business student.”
Northeastern University academic staff to teach at Swinburne in 2008
Swinburne is once again extending a warm welcome to the visiting Northeastern University faculty who will be teaching in the Global Leadership Program. This year four distinguished academic staff from Northeastern will be travelling to Melbourne for the winter term and Semester Two to teach students enrolled in the Global Leadership Program.

NUin Aus program for US high school graduates
As a result of the successful Pre-Freshman Program developed between Swinburne and Northeastern University in 2007 the program has now been transformed into the NUin Aus program. This program enables US students who have recently graduated from high school to travel to Australia to complete their first semester of university at Swinburne.
Students then return to the US to continue their undergraduate studies at Northeastern with credit for the work completed at Swinburne. Last year 23 students participated in the program. In 2008 around 40 US students are expected to enrol and will include students from a range of disciplines including arts, science, engineering and information technology. The NUinAus program runs from August through to November.

Farewell for Study Abroad Students from Northeastern University
 The 23 pre-freshmen Study Abroad students from Northeastern University (Boston, USA) marked the completion of their eight weeks at Swinburne with a farewell ceremony at the Hawthorn campus. Swinburne's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Higher Education), Professor Dale Murphy, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International and Development), Stephen Connelly, attended the ceremony, where certificates of completion were presented to the students. Northeastern University's Assistant Dean (International Education), Janet Headley, also travelled from the USA to join the students for the farewell ceremony.
The Northeastern students enjoyed their time at Swinburne's Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, and headed off on a seven-day tour to Canberra and Sydney before departing for home in mid-November.
The Swinburne-Northeastern Study Abroad program was organised through Swinburne's Northeastern Study Centre and is an expansion of the successful partnership between the two universities. The program is expected to become an annual event.
Swinburne Welcomes Study Abroad Students from Northeastern University
 Swinburne recently welcomed 23 pre-freshman Study Abroad students from Northeastern University (Boston, USA). The students will be studying at Swinburne for 8 weeks at the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, as well as undertaking a range of organised tours to wildlife parks, the Great Ocean Road and other tourist attractions in and around Melbourne.

Swinburne Welcomes New Global Leadership Program Students
 Swinburne welcomed its inaugural intake of Global Leadership Program (GLP) students, who commence the program this semester.
The program is a landmark initiative undertaken in partnership with Northeastern University in Boston, USA. In what is believed to be a world first, students are able to graduate with two master degrees upon completion of the GLP, one awarded by Swinburne and one by Northeastern.

Global Leadership Program Launched in Melbourne
 On Thursday 30 November Swinburne and Boston's Northeastern University officially launched the Joint Global Leadership Program, offered in Melbourne from 2007. The joint program offers students the opportunity to gain two masters degrees in two years; one from each institution. The program is based in Melbourne, with the Northeastern component taught by Northeastern academics.
The launch was attended by staff from Swinburne and Northeastern, including Swinburne Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Young and Vice President and Dean, School of Professional and Continuing Studies, Northeastern University, Dr Christopher E Hopey (pictured above).
Swinburne to offer joint US degrees in Melbourne

Swinburne's Academic Board has approved a landmark agreement with Boston's Northeastern University to teach combined courses in Melbourne from 2007.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Young, said the universities will initially offer two joint masters degrees under the banner of Postgraduate Programs in Global Leadership with other programs to follow.
“I believe this is the first time that students will be able to study for Australian and American qualifications at the same place anywhere in the world.
“From 2007, Swinburne will offer two joint masters degrees with the US half of the degrees to be taught by Northeastern academics seconded to Swinburne or flown out for short lecturing stints.
"Students get to have an Australian degree taught by Australians, and they also get a North American degree taught the way it is in the US," Professor Young said.
"We see this as the first step in a broader range of joint programs the universities can offer together, initially here in Australia but long-term in the United States as well."
The joint masters will consist of a Master of Business (International Business) / Master of Science in Leadership and a Master of Accounting / Master of Science in Leadership. Around 50 students are expected to enroll in February next year, growing to about 400 in three years.
A Study Centre will be set up on Swinburne's Hawthorn campus that will act as a support and information service for enrolled and prospective students.
Northeastern is the fourth-largest private university in the US with around 24,000 students. Its Board of Trustees is expected to sign off on the agreement at its next meeting in September.

Northeastern University Ranked 98th among Nation's Best Universities by U.S. News & World Report

BOSTON, Mass. - The 2007 edition of U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges, released today, ranks Northeastern University, for the first time, as one of the nation's top 100 universities. Northeastern has continued its unprecedented ascent in the magazine's rankings, this year moving up a remarkable 17 spots to number 98 on the list. Since 2001, Northeastern has moved up 52 slots.
"We are pleased to see that U.S. News & World Report has recognized the continued progress of Northeastern University," said Mark Putnam, Chief Planning Officer at Northeastern University. "The rankings reflect our commitment to excellence in all that we do."
The U.S. News & World Report survey results acknowledge the progress Northeastern has made in key areas of educational excellence, including raising the freshman retention rate (at 88 percent this year), and making class sizes smaller, with more than half of all classes at Northeastern now comprised of fewer than 20 students.
In addition, Northeastern's peer assessment score, a reflection of academic reputation, soared from 2.9 last year to 3.1 this year (on a scale of 1-5).
"We believe that our peers are now recognizing what we have known for some time," said Northeastern University Provost, Ahmed Abdelal. "Northeastern is attracting top-flight faculty, sought-after students, and significant research funding from federal agencies and private donors commensurate with the nation's very best universities."
For the fifth consecutive year in the specialty rankings, U.S. News & World Report also placed Northeastern among the top schools in the nation in the "Programs to Look For" section of the guide in the category "Internships," a nod to the excellence and unique nature of the University's flagship co-op program.
The annual U.S. News & World Report list evaluates public and private colleges and universities with the goal of providing prospective students and their parents with a baseline evaluation of college programs.
