European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU)

In 1997 eleven of Europe’s most innovative universities came together to form a new continent-wide network, to share and build on their successes as entrepreneurial institutions. In 1997 these universities signed a charter to establish the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). The founding institutions have several characteristics in common. All have academic strengths in engineering and social science; all are relatively young, entrepreneurial, and progressive; and all have close ties to industry and to the regions in which they are situated. They are committed to developing and implementing new forms of teaching, training, and research; to assuring an innovative culture within their walls’ to experimenting with new forms of management and administration; and to sustaining and nurturing internationally minded staff.
With an increasingly globalised setting for education and research and with the objectives of the ECIU towards internationalisation, the ECIU has decided to invite select overseas partners to become ECIU Associate Partners. By bringing in a set of like-minded institutions with a similar profile of being young, entrepreneurial and leaders in innovation and change, the ECIU aims at strengthening its global strategy.
In 2001 the ITESM Monterrey, Mexico received and accepted an invitation to become an Associate Partner
In 2004 Swinburne University received and accepted an invitation to become an ECIU Associate Partner.
The activities of the consortium are organised within three core areas:
- The ECIU Graduate School
- Improved Student and Staff Mobility
- University-Industry Interaction.
