Swinburne's ACS Professional Year Program in Computer Science is primarily aimed at graduates of an IT bachelor or master degree who are now holding a Skilled Graduate (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 485) or Bridging Visa A. Students holding a student visa are not eligible for the program.

Program content

The Computer Science Professional Year Program has been gazetted by government and the Australian Computer Society (ACS) to ensure that each of the program components help overview Australian workplace requirements and cover relevant employability skills and graduate attributes. The ACS will arrange the bootcamps as well as deliver the online professional component. Swinburne will deliver the remaining program content (see program components below), ensuring workplace understanding and enhanced employment opportunities on completion of the Professional Year Program.

Major program components are detailed as follows:

 

Australian Workplace Culture

  • understand the Australian employment market and workplace culture and be able to
    socialise with colleagues

  • contribute positively to the cultural diversity in the Australian workplace

  • successfully negotiate the Australian workplace culture by applying for appropriate jobs

  • develop career plans

  • write resumes and perform effectively in interviews and similar situations

  • understand and respond to employers' expectations

  • contribute positively in the workplace especially with respect to OHSE

  • appreciate the role of continuous improvement in the business

 

Business and Professional Communications

  • communicate successfully at work with colleagues, subordinates, superiors and clients

  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance of communications in client service

  • chair and participate in meetings, using appropriate language

  • write reports and other documents relevant to their profession

  • give presentations to work colleagues, managers and clients

 

Professional Work Experience (Internship)

  • perform assigned tasks and demonstrate a variety of job-seeking and job-keeping skills

  • develop an ePortfolio including a reflective practice diary

  • demonstrate and evaluate their employability skills and document them in a Career Plan.

  • follow basic occupational health and workplace safety regulations

  • understand a variety of management and organisational structures existing in Australian workplaces.

  • relate legislation governing employment to their experiences in the workplace

  • use their experiences in the workplace to evaluate personal, educational, and career plans

  • evaluate the effect of lifestyle choices on society and the workplace

  • relate emotional health and well-being to personal productivity

  • evaluate components needed to build and maintain healthy relationships in their adult lives

  • set short-term goals and evaluate long-term goals, revising as necessary

  • access, use, and evaluate services, resources, and advice related to their educational, career, and personal goals

 

IT Governance, Ethics and Strategic Business Framework

  • Strategic Business Frameworks. develop a basic risk management plan for simple projects including the impact on social, business and ecological environments

  • IT Service Management.  develop understanding of the role of IT as a client service within and between organisations IT Governance. Identify legal requirements and constraints imposed on a work/project and contribute to compliance.

  • Ethics.  Develop a working knowledge of a code of ethics, standards and professional practice and be able to apply these in basic projects.

  • Strategic application of information systems.Review an information systems strategy and how effectively it supports an organisation’s business goals and to develop  plans to manage that strategy.

  • Professional development.  Specifically, to take responsibility for your personal career planning and ongoing professional development.
