September 2009

Nature tells us that spring is the time of new beginnings. So what perfect time other than now to try something new?

This month's Student Life Monthly is packed with information about opportunities for new experiences: activities, workshops, adventure sports camps and ways to make a difference.

Have you got what it takes to design the cover of next year's student diary?

Is your student visa expiring?

Is your student visa expiring? If so, you must take action to extend your student visa or apply for an alternative visa before it expires. If you allow your visa to expire, you may have to leave Australia and not be allowed to return for three years.

You should apply to renew your student visa at least two months before it expires. First of all, you will need a new electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from Swinburne International*. You can then apply to renew your visa with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Please note that extensions are not automatic and are granted at the discretion of DIAC.

Follow the step-by-step guide to renewing your visa on the Swinburne International website. If you have any questions, contact DIAC on 131 881 or visit the Swinburne International office on your campus.

* Please note that this is different from the 'Confirmation of Enrolment and Tax Invoice' from your faculty.

From the Swinburne Health ServiceDIAC staff will be at the Prahran campus on Thursday 10 September from 10.00am–4.00pm to help you renew your visa online. Make sure you bring your eCoE and current passport.

Keep your health insurance up-to-date

OSHC Health

Is your health insurance current? The Swinburne Health Service is reminding students to make sure they are covered by OSHC Worldcare health insurance at all times.

If you've got an extra semester to complete or have extended your visa for any reason, it is essential to extend your health insurance until the end of your course.

There have been some students who've attended the Health Service who've let their insurance lapse. This has meant that they had to pay for their medical treatment.

Visit the OSHC or Medibank Private websites for more information.

Fair dinkum!

LAS workshops

For those who haven't grown up in Australia, Aussie slang can sure sound strange. We have unusual and unique expressions you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Language and Academic Services (LAS) can help you understand their meanings.

LAS runs weekly workshops to assist you with communicating confidently with Australian classmates, friends, teachers and employers. Workshops are held during lunchtimes and afternoons.

Upcoming workshops for this month include: Talking About Australian Cultural Events; Making Your Point; Social Chatting; and How to Speak to Teachers and Other Students.

To find out more about what's on, visit the LAS website.
