How to Apply

Follow the steps below to apply for a Study Abroad or Exchange program at Swinburne:

Step 1: Ensure you meet entry requirements

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program you generally must have successfully completed a year of study at a higher education institution.

United States Students

US students are expected to have a GPA of 2.6 or higher.

Mexico

Mexican students are usually required to have a minimum GPA of 80%

Students applying for design and some film and tv units need to provide a portfolio for entry.

Students from institutions teaching in languages other than English must provide evidence of language proficiency as follows:

Please note that IELTS and TOEFL results should be no more than two years old at the time of application to Swinburne University of Technology.

Applicants from some European countries may provide Secondary School English results in support of their English ability:

Denmark

Studentereksamen grade 7 in English Level A or grade 10 in English Level B.

Netherlands

Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs minimum 7 in English.

Norway

Vitnemal den Videragaende Skole minimum 4 in English.

Sweden

VG in English.

Germany

Fachhochschulereife with at least 3 in English, or,

Abitur with at least 7 in English, or,

DAAD language test with minimum of B in all sections

Step 2: Develop your Swinburne study plan


To choose the subjects you wish to study at Swinburne, please visit our unit search page. For subjects grouped by disipline area, please visit the specialisations page.

Ensure the subjects are available in your Study Abroad semester/s by checking the Allocate Plus website.

Make sure that you meet any prerequisites that your desired subjects may have.

A full-time credit load at Swinburne University of Technology is 50 SUT credits. Most subjects at Swinburne are worth 12.5 SUT credits.

We recommend you list at least six subjects on your application form in order of preference, in case one of your subjects is not available or not suitable.

Step 3: Complete the application form


For assistance with applying, students from partner institutions should seek advice from their home university's International Office. Other students who have any questions while completing the application form can email studyabroad@swinburne.edu.au.

Application dates vary. If you are an exchange student please contact your home university regarding application deadlines. If you are applying for the Study Abroad program please contact studyabroad@swinburne.edu.au

Study Abroad students who wish to apply for the Study Abroad Certificate of Specialisation must indicate on the form where requested, which discipline area they wish to specialise.

Faculty of Design Applicants

If you are applying for a unit in the Faculty of Design, including design, film and television units, you are required to submit a portfolio of work with your application.

All portfolios should include current work completed at your home institution that demonstrates a high level of technical and creative merit. All work submitted should be of an appropriate standard for the level of subjects you are applying for at the Faculty of Design.

Step 4: Provide supporting documentation

A complete Study Abroad or Exchange application must include:

  • Certified academic transcripts with grading system
  • English translations where applicable
  • Certified English proficiency test results
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Curriculum vitae (résumé)
  • Referee reports (if applicable)
  • Portfolio, for students who are applying for design and film & TV units
  • Copy of passport (photo page and relevant visa page if applicable)

Step 5: Submit application and documentation

Step 6: Receive your offer

Your application will be assessed. If it is approved, Swinburne will make you an offer. This will include:

  • Official offer letter
  • Unit nomination form

Step 7: Accept your offer

It is important that you read all information on your offer letter carefully. To accept your offer, you will need to return the requested Offer Acceptance Form, unit nomination form and make payment by the due date, as advised. Details on how to accept your offer can be found here.
