Aims and objectives

Aims:
* To provide students with specialist knowledge and skills for working with particular client groups in a counselling framework as well as working in private practice or school settings
* To integrate the knowledge and skills gained during supervised practicums and coursework such that students are ready to transfer this knowledge and skill to psychological practice after graduation
* To ensure that students are prepared for the demands of private practice as a psychologist.
 
Objectives:
* To prepare personal reflections about their training and preparation
* To understand the various settings in which counselling psychologists practise
* To be prepared for the supervision of less experienced psychologists.

Teaching methods

Lectures, tutorials, experiential exercises, workshops and discussions.

Assessment

Pair Assignment (2,000 - 2,500 words)
Written Case Study (2,500 ‐ 3,000 words)
Attendance to at least 10 of the 12 scheduled classes is a hurdle requirement to pass this unit of study.

Generic skills outcomes

Students will be provided with feedback on their progress in attaining the following generic skills:

* Problem solving skills

Content

Topics might include:
* Working with children and adolescents
* Cross cultural counselling
* Setting up a private practice, and,
* Addiction counselling.
