This unit is studied within the Associate Degree of Applied Graphic Design.

Aims and objectives

This unit aims to introduce students to the basic principles of drawing and imaging for the development of ideas and
narratives pertinent to graphic design problems. Students are encouraged to experiment and to explore form and
structure within the drawing medium to develop skills and techniques for creating pre-visualisation material that
communicates an idea successfully. Through a program of project based and peer reviewed learning, students will
complete a series of activities that will demonstrate a conceptual, lateral and informed understanding and application
of this knowledge.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Utilise skills of visual perception, drawing, concept development and composition;
2. Apply investigative, conceptual and lateral approaches to idea development;
3. Convey information in the form of symbolic and graphic representation;
4. Develop communication objectives and use visual experimentation to resolve design communications;
5. Achieve a high standard of finish and presentation for design outcomes;
6. Use interactive and screen based media to extend 2 dimensional designs;
7. Record, evidence and reflect on project development and resolution.

This unit will be taught at the Wantirna campus.

Teaching methods

60 hours of structured learning, including lectures, tutorials and assessments. In addition, the units require
approximately 90 hours of self-study, projects, assignments and skills development.
